BasicDog CMS update - 24/11/2011

I decided to turn my attention to the 'botched effort' that I had in place for managing images within the CMS, this basically involved uploading the files into a single folder on the server with no way to order or delete files.

This made it very difficult to find the images that you needed to use in any pages and needed some serious thought.

I have now added a few more features and here is the breakdown:

BasicDog CMS update - 28/10/2011

I realised during my last update that I had a laundry list of things to add to make the use comments a viable option in the CMS, I have now added a few more features and here is the breakdown:

Improvements

You can now add an e-mail when commenting on a page; this will e used by the system for alerts only. When someone posts on a page that you have commented on you will receive an alert informing you of this.

I have given the ability to 'opt-out' of this by advising the posted to leave the e-mail feild empty.

Google Search - Removing URLs

In the transition to EcoGamer.co.uk, I found that the archived pages here on BasicDog featuring Eco PC Gaming were still showing on the google searches.

I have been playing with the Google Webmaster Tools for a while and decided to see what I could do to research this potential issue. The problem arose from the custom 404 page that I use in the BasicDogCMS and the fact that it still returns a page rather than a 404 status code.

The URL removal tool in the Google Webmaster tools seemed just the ticket to resolving this, but after looking into this in more depth I decided that an improvement to the CMS was in order. I have now added a 'meta noindex tag' to the custom 404 page that should tell Google to ignore that page, which should help the pages to disappear from the cached search results quickly.

EcoGamer.co.uk Launched

I have now Moved the 'Eco PC Gaming' articles from BasicDog to my new site Eco Gamer so if you are here looking for those pages please head over there now. The new site will concentrate on spreading the word of energy efficient gaming with a much more appropriate domain name and be a site with a real purpose.

It will be using the BasicDogCMS as a base and this should be a great test of the flexibility of the software in practical use.

BasicDog CMS update - 17/09/2011

I realised during my last update that I had a laundry list of things to add to make the use comments a viable option in the CMS, I have now added those features and here is the breakdown:

Improvements

I have added a site wide system option to edit the anti-spam question and the expected answer; this should at least allow a rotation of anti-spam questions just in case of any breaches.

An e-mail address field has been added for all users in the system, each user can alter their own when logged in. The e-mail address listed for the user who created each page will receive an e-mail alert with the details of the comment.

BasicDog CMS update - 13/09/2011

Again I have made mostly improvements to the functionality and usability of the CMS, rather than finding things to fix (which was suprising as I have been using it to produce cotent a fair amount recently) and here is a brief description of what is new:

Improvements

Comments have been added to BasicDogCMS, and I am in the proces of adding the additional features and functionality that come along with comments. This is one of the features that I feel the CMS has been gravely missing from the I started developing it.

DIY Extending Monitor Floor Stand

I discovered a need for a monitor stand which is self standing and can be height adjusted, this short article will detail how I went about creating my own using different products available after Google failed to find anything cheap to buy.

From using a netbook on the arm of my sofa at home, I have become acclimatised to using a computer while watching TV with my wife, if is much nicer to use a computer without being hidden away in a back room or study, it is a much more sociable set up. This however caused some issues when using the gaming PC in the living room; at first I had the screen sitting on top of the tower and this looked both ugly and was very much in the way.

So I decided to look into an alternative which would allow the PC to be moved to a discreet place (behind the arm of the sofa) and for the monitor to stand by itself and preferably be able to be moved/hidden away when not being used. It had to be cheap and not too horrid to look at when being used, also had to be able to be low enough to be hidden from sight and also tall enough to be useable when extended.

BasicDog CMS update - 26/08/2011

Since the last update I have made mostly improvements to the functionality and usability of the CMS, here is a brief description of what is new:

Improvements

The biggest change, and one I have been meaning to do since initially creating the site is that admin users can now alter the order of sidebar content. They can also choose what is shown or not, and this now also includes the 'Tags' menu which was previously hard-coded and positioned after all other sidebar items

A dropdown filter has been added to the content list page so that the user can filter the content by status

A logout button is now shown on the header menu when users are logged in, this is not shown to user that are not logged in.

BasicDog CMS update - 16/08/2011

This is the first of what I hope will be many updates on how I am improving and enhancing the BasicDog CMS system. This week I have made both improvements and fixes to the system.

As I make improvements I am trying to keep in mind future applications for the CMS and so some of them I probably won't be actively using.

BasicDog CMS

I am happy to announce (to anyone who might care) that I have now fully migrated BasicDog.co.uk onto my own CMS system, and what you are now seeing on your screen is all my own work. This is because a few weeks back I decided to try to learn PHP again and as a project I set myself the mission of creating a CMS from scratch to replace Drupal for BasicDog.co.uk.

At the beginning I would have been happy enough just to have the functionality in place to create new and edit existing content, though soon after I began work I realised that many more features would quickly follow.
